Cottages United Program

It is our mission to provide seniors with an affordable home, that allows them to age in place with dignity. We have created plans for an intentional community of small, safe, affordable cottages that are tastefully designed and supported by the surrounding Swegle community.

Cottages United Updates:

The United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley, celebrated the ribbon cutting ceremony for our first 10 cottages on May 30, 2024, with phases 2 & 3 being “shovel ready” once funding is secured. Phase 1 cottage vacancy is currently filled with tenants moving in June 2024.

Problem

Many older Oregonians are entitled to Social Security benefits. However, these benefits (currently $1,550.48 average for an individual*) remain well below the poverty line and often fail to cover the cost of housing. Truthfully, a senior person relying on benefits cannot afford housing at the Free Market Rate anywhere in the country.

Solution & Impact

We have purchased four lots on Market Street near Swegle Elementary. Plans are underway to build 25 cottages with community spaces for seniors to gather. With phase 1 complete and the first 10 cottages being rented out in June 2024, we look to make progress on phase 2 of Cottages United.
